New Topics Added for Fall 2013

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Public and nonprofit managers can enhance their leadership and management skills in Rutgers’ convenient Mini-Master in Public Administration™ program being offered again this fall starting October 4.

Registration is now underway for the program offered by the Center for Executive Leadership in Government (CELG) at its headquarters at 303 George St. in downtown New Brunswick. The certificate program is designed for people with a college degree and/or significant managerial experience in the public, private or nonprofit sectors.

The 30-hour program is conveniently structured for working professionals with classes on five Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., October 4, 18, and 25, and November 1 and 8.  Participants must complete the entire program to earn the Mini-MPA™ certificate and three CEUs.

Those successfully completing the program may apply three credits toward a full Executive MPA offered by CELG in collaboration with Rutgers-Camden’s Department of Public Policy and Administration.

The program covers 10 topics critical to public and nonprofit management taught by experienced Rutgers faculty and practitioners. Sessions feature interactive, in-depth discussions, covering timely topics and issues.

Seminar topics will include: “Leadership and Intergovernmental Relations,” “Communication and Public Law,” “Managing Public Organizations and People,” and “Financial Management and Ethical Dilemmas.”

New this year will be sessions on “Performance Management and Constituent Communications,” covering essential skills for executives in the 21st-century public and nonprofit environments.

First offered in 2011, the Mini-MPA™ has awarded certificates to more than 70 people from the public and nonprofit sectors and has received high marks in surveys of its graduates.

According to Angie McGuire, associate director of CELG, the Mini-MPA™ can benefit mid-career professionals as well as recent college graduates.

“Mid-career professionals can fast-track their careers and recent graduates can explore public-sector careers and service,” McGuire said.

The program fee is $2,500, and includes breakfast, lunch and all materials. Recently dislocated workers may be eligible for Individual Training Account (ITA) grants. Discounts are available for organizations enrolling two or more participants.
