Gulick House Receives Certification of Eligibility for Historic Registers

The William Gulick House, located at 3601 Lawrenceville-Princeton Road, has received a formal certification of eligibility for the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Historic Preservation Office issued a letter confirming the certification and concurring with the architectural significance of the house. This paves the way for the final application and registration of the property with the historic registers. The pre-application was prepared and submitted to the state by James T. Callahan of Hillsborough Township. Mr. Callahan is a commercial and fine art photographer who photographs historic homes and buildings and is passionate about preserving New Jersey’s irreplaceable historic resources. He has a particular interest in the 19th century homes in the area.

“I believe it’s imperative to do everything possible to preserve and sustain historic properties like the Gulick House for both the community and for future generations,” says Callahan, “because once they’re gone you can never get them back. They’re an important part of our cultural and state history.”

Now that the property has been certified as eligible for a nomination Mr. Callahan says he intends to apply for grant funding through the New Jersey Historical Commission for his work on the project.

“I also want to tell the community that the house interior was not significantly damaged by fire as some local media had reported back in 2011," he added. "It’s a solid structure and my hope is that it can be restored to its original glory for the benefit of the people of Lawrence and the surrounding communities.”
