DIVERSITY/CULTURE DAY

The Lawrence Township Human Relations Committee in cooperation with the Lawrence Township School District is sponsoring the Ninth Annual Diversity/Culture Day 2014, on Sunday, May 4th, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM.  This year the event will be held in the Commons at Lawrence High School at 2525 Princeton Pike, in Lawrenceville.

 

The purpose of the Human Relations Committee is to help the Township of Lawrence celebrate its diversity and to advise the Town Council on cultural affairs. The Committee recommends and evaluates programs to increase cultural awareness and promotes harmony between the diverse cultures.

Join the community as it connects with and celebrates the many ethnic, racial, and cultural groups living in town. Meet your neighbors from every part of Lawrence Township, make new friends, and be part of this community occasion. Experience the different exhibits, various performances, and international music. There will be games and projects.  Admission and parking is free, along with a variety of foods from local restaurants.

Councilman Michael Powers, Esq. is the liaison between the Council and the Human Relations Committee. Teresita Bastides-Heron and John R. Gaskins are co-chairs of the committee, and the members include Lt. Charles Edgar, Rich McLaugahlin, Inderjit [Indy] Sidhu, and Denalerie J. Johnson-Faniel, PhD.

 

        The Human Relations Committee is pleased to announce that Pamela Pruitt will be the keynote speaker this year.  Grammy award winner, Ms. Pruitt, is Director of Multicultural Affairs at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is responsible for promoting unity and diversity among students, faculty, and staff through programs, training, celebrations, and community outreach. She also is a part-time lecturer at the School of Communication & Information [SC&I] at Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ.

 

Ms. Pruitt received her Masters of Communication and Information Studies [MCIS] from Rutgers in 2012, having studied abroad in Oxfordshire, England at Wroxton College of Fairleigh Dickinson University.  In 2010 she received her BA in Communications from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, NJ.

 

        The program this year will be as diverse as the community.  The Yuan Yuan Group will have several performances like Chinese Yo Yo and The Tea Harvest Dancers. They also will have a demonstration on Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Paper folding. The Kuulei’s Hawaiian Dancers will be presenting their traditional dance. There will be a Martial Arts demonstration from Master Lee of World KM Tae Kwon Do.

 

The Lawrence High School International Alliance & Career Academies will be participating as volunteers during the event, along with GEPNA, the Mercer County Library (Lawrence Branch), and the Lawrence Township Senior Center to name but a few. There will be crafts from Algeria, India and South America. The Irish Dancers will perform the Irish River Dance. Among the many other activities, there will be the popular children’s corner with face-painting.
