Rebecca Soni won her first gold medal at the London Olympics and broke her world record time in the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday. The Plainsboro native pushed her way ahead and came out on top with a time of 2:19.59, ahead of Japan’s Satomi Suzuki by 1.13 seconds. But this gold medal probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most, as Soni also shaved .12 seconds off the world record time during Wednesday’s semifinals to take Canada's Annamay Pierse spot for the title. Plainsboro native Rebecca Soni set a world record for the 200-meter breaststroke, and will compete Thursday in the finals for another Olympic medal. During the semifinals, Soni beat the former record-holder with a time of 2:20:00. Twenty-five-year-old Rebecca Soni is taking home a silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics in the 100-meter breaststroke. Soni came in with the time of 1:05.55, falling .08 seconds behind Lithuania’s 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte who took the gold with a time of 1:05.47. At start of the race it appeared there was a malfunction with the starting gun, but noone was disqualified.  Later this week Soni will compete in heats for the 200-meter breaststroke and the 4x100 medley relay.
