Whiz Kids - Reagan, Emma and Sophie
Welcome to Whiz Kids. Each week we will honor a great kid from Lawrence Township who is an inspiration to all of us, adults included.
- Reagan, Emma and Sophie, all 5-years-old
- Organized an Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise money to combat childhood cancer
Reagan, Emma and Sophie are good friends. They are playful 5-year-old girls who are filled with compassion and understanding. Recently they told their mothers they wanted to have a lemonade stand during their neighborhood yard sale. When asked if they wanted to buy something with the money or “donate to other children their age who are sick, they did not hesitate in their response. They all wanted to donate the money that is made,” said Gemma Amiott, mother to one of the girls.
The girls chose Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation as the recipient of their fundraising effort. The organization is named for its founder, Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who died from cancer in 2004 at the age of 8. When she was just 4 years old, Alex began her effort to increase awareness about childhood cancer and raise money to support research into new treatments and cures.
The foundation works to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.
“Of course we are proud that is what they decided and want to support them,” Amiott said. “Five years old may seem early to teach our children a lesson about cancer, but when there are so many 5-year-old children fighting the fight against cancer I do not think it is too early for us to know how lucky we are.”
Debbi Radlinsky, mom to the other girls, asked her daughters at the end of the day how it went. “Emma said ‘Awesome!’” she related. “That sums it up for a 5-year-oold.”
The girls raised a total of $175 – $60 in cash during the yard sale on June 18, and an additional $115 online. Donations can still be made online at http://www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/74555.
Radlinksy said they would certainly do it again. She pointed out, though, that “5-year-olds get restless when it slows down.”
Great job Reagan, Emma and Sophie!
