Slackwood Firefighters Extinguish Flaming Corvette

The blaze about 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, occurred on New York Avenue, just over the Lawrence Township border into Trenton.

Volunteer firefighters from Lawrence Township’s Slackwood Fire Co. this evening (Thursday, Aug. 11) extinguished a fire that destroyed a Corvette.

The blaze occurred on New York Avenue, between Strawberry Street and Pear Street, in Trenton, just a stone’s throw from the Lawrence Township border.

Both Lawrence and Trenton dispatched firefighters after receiving 911 calls about the blaze about 9:15 p.m.

Arriving on the scene about a half-minute ahead of firefighters from Trenton’s Engine 6, Slackwood firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.

A bystander said he had been on his way home from work when he spotted smoke and went to investigate. When he arrived, the man said, another passing motorist was already in the process of trying to douse the flames with a handheld fire extinguisher.

But the fire was too large for the extinguisher and soon the Corvette was engulfed in flames, he said.

Police officers from Trenton and Lawrence also responded, but the Lawrence officer left soon after confirming the blaze was in Trenton.

It was not immediately clear if the vehicle – which had a Pennsylvania license plate – had been stolen and abandoned, or whether its driver had walked away in search of help.
