Promise Klink - Whiz Kid of the Week

Welcome to Whiz Kids. Each week we will honor a great kid from Lawrence Township who is an inspiration to all of us, adults included.

  • Promise Klink
  • 9 years old
  • 3rd grader at Saint Ann School
  • Founder of Warm Promises, a blanket drive for babies in need

Promise Klink has been named Lawrenceville Patch's Whiz Kid of the Week.

A few months ago Promise asked her schoolmates, family members and friends for brand-new baby blankets. On Dec. 23 she delivered 70 blankets to babies in need in the maternity department of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton - the same hospital where she was born in 2001. She named the project Warm Promises.

Promise came up with the idea for Warm Promises as a result of numerous trips she made to the hospital to visit her grandmother (who has since passed away) and her grandfather (who is recovering from surgery). Promise realized that not only are there lots of items people need in a hospital, but that a hospital can be a pretty scary and lonely place. She thought about the one item that comforted and soothed her the most - her blanket.

In a letter to her schoolmates, Promise wrote: "A blanket might seem like such a basic childhood necessity, but for many babies it is a luxury that they don’t have. Blankets not only offer warmth in this cold weather, but also offer security and comfort. I still have my very first blanket from when I was born."

Promise was very touched by the appreciation and attention that her blanket donation received. Hospital officials said it was the first time they had received a donation like the one from Promise. She has felt the true rewards of giving and has already started collecting blankets for next year.

According to Promise's mother, Toni Klink, a web site may be in the works for the next drive. Promise said the drive was a success thanks to the many wonderful and generous people who so graciously donated blankets to the cause.
