Plainsboro Olympian Wins Gold, Beats World Record a Second Time
Rebecca Soni also won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke on Monday.
Rebecca Soni won her first gold medal at the London Olympics and broke her world record time in the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday.
The Plainsboro native pushed her way ahead and came out on top with a time of 2:19.59, ahead of Japan’s Satomi Suzuki by 1.13 seconds.
But this gold medal probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most, as Soni also shaved .12 seconds off the world record time during Wednesday’s semifinals to take Canada's Annamay Pierse spot for the title.
On Monday Soni snagged her first medal from the London Olympics, silver in the 100-meter breaststroke. She was beat out by Lithuania’s 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte, who took the gold.
Twenty-five-year-old Soni graduated West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North in 2005 and attended University of Southern California, according to her website. She was born in Freehold and now calls Manhattan Beach, Ca. home.
Soni took home a gold and two silver medals at the Beijing Olympics.
