Mmmm... Girl Scout Cookie Sales Begin on Thursday

Girl scouts will be selling cookies from booths at locations throughout Lawrence Township.

Mmmm…cookies!

Yes, it’s that time of year again when you can once more indulge your secret cravings for Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Sandwiches and the five other kinds of Girl Scout Cookies that are made.

Girl scouts around the nation – including members of the 43 troops that make up the Lawrence Ewing Trenton Area Girl Scouts association – this Thursday, Jan. 20, will begin going door-to-door in their neighborhoods selling boxes of Peanut Butter Patties, Lemonades, Shortbreads, Shout Outs!, Thanks-A-Lots and the three other varieties.

Diana Maurer, service unit cookie manager for Lawrence Ewing Trenton Area Girl Scouts, said the selling of cookies is one of two major fund-raisers for the Girl Scouts. The other, she noted, is the sale of nuts and candies in the Fall.

In preparation for the start of sales this week, a tractor-trailer delivered 2,567 cases – each containing a dozen boxes – of cookies to a warehouse at the National Guard Armory on Eggerts Crossing Road last Tuesday, Jan. 11. "That's a lot of cookies," Maurer said.

Volunteers unloaded the tractor-trailer and arranged the cases by troop. Troop members then picked up their allotment of cookies throughout the morning and afternoon.

At first it might seem unusual to see row-upon-row of Thin Mints and other cookies sitting just a few feet away from an armored tank. But Maurer, who said this is the fourth year the armory has been used, explained that the facility is a great location for the cookie distribution.

“They’ve been really cooperative and helpful,” she said of the armory staff.

Girl Scout Yeeling Tai, 9, of Ewing stopped by to help pick up her troop’s allotment of cookies. She said she anticipates good sales this week. “My neighborhood loves Thin Mints,” she said.
