Lawrence High School senior Nyya Toussaint has been recognized for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama.
Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities.
This year Nyya participated in the Spirit of Community program and earned the prestigious award for his work as organizer of Threads, a student-run, school volunteer program whose students, through various activities, assists other Lawrence students and community members.
In the notification letter Nyya received from President Obama, the president quotes his inaugural address, stating: "We need a new era of responsibility – a recognition on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world. These are duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit than giving our all to a difficult task. Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise."
