Editor's Note: The following is a news release issued by the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
Three separate indictments were recently returned by Mercer County grand juries charging an 86-year-old Lawrence Township man with criminal sexual contact.
Charles Deaton, of Ivy Glen Lane, was charged in three separate cases.
He was indicted for one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact for touching the breast and buttocks of a 30-year-old neighbor on Nov. 29, 2011.
The second indictment charges Deaton with one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact for touching a pharmacy employee on Jan. 28, 2012.
The last indictment charges Deaton with one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact for touching the breasts of a Macy’s employee on July 23, 2012.
A fourth-degree crime carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in state prison.
A grand jury determined that insufficient evidence existed for an indictment with regard to the incident that occurred on Jan. 25, 2012, where Deaton was charged with criminal sexual contact for touching the breast of a 61-year-old neighbor.
An indictment is merely an accusation. All persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
