Sharks Tie Thrashers in Mother's Day Thriller
The U-10 Lawrence Hamnett Sharks celebrated Mother's Day this past Sunday (May 13) by travelling to East Brunswick to take on the Thrashers. The game was highlighted by great goalkeeping and splendid possession by the Sharks.
Goalkeepers Foster Wakeman and Aiden Kane made a number of diving saves and held the Thrashers scoreless. Contributing to the shutout was the aggressive play of defenders Justin Krisak, Michael Kemo, Harry LaZelle, John Caccavale, and Jack Collins who helped lock down the Thrashers' offense.
On the opposite end of the pitch, the Sharks' offense, led by Zachery Young, Ben Cohen, Trevor Stio, Ian Wang, Devon Meth and Joey Briggs, put on a dribbling and passing clinic that resulted in a number of runs on East Brunswick's net. Cohen and Stio both had near misses on strikes that hit the goalpost, while Krisak showed a strong foot on corner kicks that created exciting scoring opportunities.
After 60 hard-fought minutes, the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The score, however, was not indicative of the Sharks' determined and unselfish play. The Sharks now travel to Highland Park on Sunday, May 20, for their final regular season match.
Charge Defeat Elizabeth Desportivo on Mother’s Day
The U-12 Charge stayed strong during a Mother’s Day (May 13) battle defeating the Elizabeth Desportivo 4-2. Being down by a goal early in the game, the Charge prevailed as Estuardo DeLeon tallied two assists on goals by Adam LeCompte and Ryan Monaghan. DeLeon then followed with a goal on a direct kick and, as the referee tightened up on the calls, Kiernan Humphreys sent a penalty kick into the lower left corner to give the Charge a three-goal lead.
Even though Elizabeth were resilient and brought the game within two goals, the defensive strengths of Sean McLaughlin, Hutch Collins, Joseph Giuliano, and Patrick Franceschini protected keepers Sal Rego and Logan Hillegas. Solid offensive moves by Dylan Pawar, Aidan Jodoin, Ethan Crutchley, Kiernan Humphreys, Hakim Hachicha, and Christian Fang aided in keeping the ball in the offensive end through most of the second half.
Hot Peppers Dominate the Delran Dynamite
The Girls U-12 Lawrence Hamnett Hot Peppers defused the Delran Dynamite this past Saturday (May 12) winning 4-1 at their Rider University home field. Sara Zoll led the offensive line of Elizabeth Haigh and Morgan Frank this weekend with a hat trick, and Alexandra Wakeman led the defensive efforts of Jen Zoll, Vickie Wierzbowicz, Sara Hatfield, and Michaela Drake, by holding the Dynamite to one goal in the final seconds of the game.
Midfielders Kristen Pirrocco, Julia Faranetta, Madeleine Kemo, and Avery Dalton were consistently stingy on defense and brutally aggressive on the attack for a full 60 minutes. Due to injuries throughout the season, the Peppers again played most of the game with no subs. This game locked their First Place position in the South Jersey Girls Soccer League Southern Flight #5. The Peppers were ranked at the bottom of the flight going into the season. After losing three key players early in the season, prospect for victory looked dim. But the team rose above adversity and continued to work together to win. The Peppers are currently undefeated with a record of 5-0-4.
Charge Continue Winning Streak With Victory Over Cranford Rush
The Charge’s five-game winning streak brought them to a record of 5-2-1 after defeating the Cranford Rush 2-1 on Sunday, May 6. The Rush came out strong and took an early lead but Hakim Hachicha stole the ball deep in the corner to send a blazing cross to Adam LeCompte who headed the ball past the Cranford keeper to even up the game.
The speed of defenders Hutch Collins, Sean McLaughlin, Joseph Giuliano, and Patrick Franceschini limited shots taken on keeper Kyle Schuler throughout the game. Midfielders Aidan Jodoin, Ethan Crutchley, Kieran Humphreys and Dylan Pawar set up multiple plays to forwards Christian Fang and Ryan Monaghan and with only a few minutes left in the game, Luke Annand scored on a penalty kick after Cranford took a handball call in the box.
