Lawrence Firefighters Rescue Hundreds During Storm

Lawrence Township firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel - assisted by National Guard members and mutual aid teams from surrounding towns - have evacuated hundreds of people from Hurricane Irene's flood waters.

Since about 4:15 a.m. today (Sunday, Aug. 28), as Hurricane Irene lashed New Jersey, Lawrence Township volunteer and career firefighters, police and other emergency responders have rescued hundreds of people from flooded homes, apartment buildings and motels.

Officials said firefighters used boats to evacuate more than 100 people from the Westgate apartment complex and the 2100 block of Princeton Pike between 4:15 a.m. and about 6:30 a.m.

Afterward another 140 or so people were removed from the Red Roof Inn on Route 1, many in boats, followed by dozens more from homes on Bakers Basin Road and apartments in the 100 block of Franklin Corner Road.

Rescues are still being made, with the assistance of National Guard personnel and mutual aid marine units from neighboring towns.

Evacuees were being bused to a shelter set up at Rider University.
