Christie: House Majority's 'Toxic Politics' to Blame for Delay in Sandy Aid
New Jersey's governor delivers harsh words for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives
Gov. Chris Christie is placing blame for the lengthy delay in approval of a Hurricane Sandy Relief bill squarely on the shoulders of combative U.S. House of Representative Republicans, specifically Speaker John Boehner.
Christie offered a scathing rebuke of Boehner and waffling Republicans during a press conference in Trenton Wednesday afternoon, saying Congress has failed in its primary purpose, to protect its own citizens. Residents of New York and New Jersey are being used as pawns in a game of politics, he said, and that's why this country's citizens "hate" Washington D.C.
"Last night, politics was placed before help for our citizens," Christie said. "For me, it was disappointing and disgusting to watch."
Christie said he and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo have been working tirelessly with officials of every level of government, all the way to the White House, in an effort to determine the extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and develop a fair relief package.
Both he and Cuomo where given assurances beginning this past weekend and even Tuesday night that the proposed $60.4 billion aid package would be voted on by the House of Representatives just as soon as the fiscal cliff was addressed. Congress found a resolution for that, but tabled the Sandy package.
Blame for that, Christie said, falls on one man.
"All I can tell you was that this was the Speaker's decision, his alone," Christie said about Boehner's apparent decision to table the aid package.
Christie began his presser by offering a disaster roll call. Hurricane Andrew made landfall on Aug. 24, 1992. President George Bush and Congress signed an initial relief package into law in 17 days. Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005. In just 10 days, more than $60 billion in aid was signed into law. Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike both caused significant damage when they hit land in 2008. In a little over two weeks, an aid package was signed into law.
Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey's coast on Oct. 29, causing an estimated $37 billion in property damage in this state alone. It's been 66 days, Christie said, and Congress has done nothing.
Unfortunately, Christie said, the bill could not overcome the "toxic internal politics of the House majority," and for that, he blames Boehner.
Christie said politics have always been put aside when it comes to responding to a disaster. Following this disaster, with Congress caught up in the politics of what he called a "fake fiscal cliff," some leaders crossed the aisle to find a funding solution. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor both took to the floor to petition for the aid package in a moment of bipartisanship Christie said many thought they might never see.
Republican and Democrat leaders from Sandy-impacted states have been joined by Republicans and Democrats in the the Gulf States affected by Katrina in support of the aid package. Christie said he's been on the phone with Cantor, who has promised to continue working toward approving the aid package. Christie called Obama, who promised to do his best.
When Christie called Boehner last night to find out why the Sandy package had been dropped from 112th Congress's to-do list - four times, in fact - he said did not receive a call back.
"New Jersey deserves better than the duplicity we saw on display last night," Christie said. "America deserves better."
Disasters aren't limited to Red states or Blue states, Christie said. It's a reality many in Congress, but not all, understand. Christie also noted New Jersey and New York's position as donor states, who pay far more in taxes to the federal government each year than they get in return.
Ultimately, Christie said it's up the responsible members of Congress to ensure this bill passes.
“Our only hope is for the good people to prevail in Congress," he said.

I beg your pardon, fed up. The speaker should have enough leadership skills to tackle the problem at hand and do what is best for his country. If he was so offended by the "pork," he had the time and opportunity to amend the bill. Instead, he lied to members of Congress (and our governor) by promising it would be voted on, only to table it at the last minute. He is a poor leader.

3:49 pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2013
The problem with the "pork" is it is in every bill and only adds to the growing deficit this country is taxed with. Only $9BN of this bill would be earmarked for spending in the next 9 months that would ultimately offer real relief for this area. Almost half of the $60BN is earmarked for spending in 2015 or later - basically of no use to anyone suffering from the storm today. If we need $10BN of aid to get NJ/NY through the aftermath of Sandy that is what the bill should be for, not billions upon billions or unrelated expenditures to appease special interest groups.

Your homes should have been insured for flood loss, they were not. We move on.
Is the boardwalk in any town so important that the goverment of the USA needs to get further in debt to pay for it. Will life go on of they do not choose to do so.
There is an implied risk to living along the coast and various shorelines. That is why these homes were never worth this much many years ago.

So tell me -- are you that bored tonight that you had to surf across the web to find the Toms River Patch to troll on? I mean, it's obvious to me that by your remarks you can't live in New Jersey, much less down the Shore (unless you're one of those wealthy snobs out in the Western Jersey horse counties where money is plentiful and empathy for your fellow man is not).
There are many people who have lost their houses -- their PRIMARY houses, not vacation homes. The ones that are insured to the hilt against flood, wind, fire, and everything else. Some people have great insurance companies and are in the process of rebuilding. Some have horrible insurance companies (I hear Allstate is a real winner; not surprising since they want to pull out of Jersey altogether) that are fighting over whether the damage is considered "flood" or "wind" related. In any event, none of it has anything to do with the boardwalk. And if helps someone get back in their home quicker, and into their 1989 bed instead of a fleabag motel (where most of these people have been staying for two months; you should try it sometime instead of your horse farm), so be it.
It's always "putting the government in more debt" unless it happens to you personally. You know, you should always be careful what you say, because karma may hit you hard someday and you'll probably be the first to cry to the government for help, insurance or not.

You are correct that many people in other areas do not care about NY or NJ. That is why these bills get loaded with pork. To get the vote of congressional representatives from Detroit, Michigan they add in car purchases. To get the vote from representatives from Alaska they add in fisheries. That is how bills have gotten passed for decades. We can complain about pork in these bills but it is the only way to get them passed in congress. Democrats and Republicans both have done this and until we require a vote on every appropriation separately, this will continue.

WQW, how you all and Christie are being played. You have sleazy Senators sneaking extra money for their states at our expense while their friends in the media cover that fact up. Don't forget the media paints a pretty picture of NJ as the home of crooked politicians who steal, the Sopranos, Snookie, and Sandy victims as elitist 1%ers who lost their multimillion dollar vacation homes and have no place to sip martinis while watching the ocean. I have no use for Boehner but I am able to read (unlike most politicians and their supporters) and understand he is by no means the only one culpable.

Stop foreign aid for 2 weeks and pass the bill! CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME!

Stop bickering and pointing fingers at what is wrong with our country. I want to go home, sleep in my bed and enjoy the comforts of home. Oclocal1 - I couldn't agree with you more! Insured to the max and not one penny yet. Primary home, on the mainland, is unlivable and "lucky" enough to find a rental for an additional few thousand a month, with a child going to college next fall. Rules regarding rebuilding are unclear depending on which new flood level you are at and the 50% rule dealing with whether your house must be raised up? How long will it take to get the supposed FEMA $ for that? The Federal Aid Bill for Sandy should have been just about Sandy relief not the rest of this crap. If the Feds truly had a conscience they would agree to separate the "pork" out right now and approve the relief. Every NJ/NY politician regardless of their party needs to rally behind our Governors and demand that a bill solely addressing the relief be signed immediately! When I read how quickly aid was approved from past storms in other states it made me sick that they are holding out on us.

I was never a fan of Christie. After Sandy hit, I developed a new respect for this man who put politics aside to help the citizens of this state. This is the thanks he gets from his party. If I were him, I would tell the Republican Party to shove it and turn Independent immediately. The Republicans have no interest in helping New Jersey or New York. Tornado damage is nothing compared to this and the cost of doing business in New Jersey. The density of buildings and people cannot be compared to anywhere else.
If I lived near the water I would have flood insurance, sorry you failed to do so. So now I guess we all have to pick up the tab while you saved money all the years you failed to have it.
A boardwalk is not an essential piece of infrastructure to any town. It might help people rent their investment homes out more easier but that is about it. A couple of pizzerias make money a few months a year from it and then close by now. No real shot to the Ecconomy since it is all cash that little of it is declared. How does Florida survive without a boardwalk.
This is a homeowners problem. Always was until FEMA became a household word after Katrina. Let the homeowners of Belmar build the boardwalk if it is so vital to their survival. You pay for your own private community and beaches that no one else is allowed to use.

I give Christie a ton of credit in blaming another party member. Rare in deed! It's usually straight finger pointing. Republicans say Democrats did it - vice-versa.
In my eyes we have failed far worse than the politicians. 98.5% of us {self included} do not pay attention enough to realize what's going on. Bills and recovery efforts worth Billions of dollars - and we have NO IDEA what is really being done - where the money goes. Not at the City, County, State - or even the Federa Levell!! Our heads are spinning enough.from trying to cope with our own little world!
Let's all try to pay attention to one Issue in the Government. Something that affects YOU first hand. Look at what's being done. Ask questions - Demand answers.
Have you noticed the old saying - FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE - is so - Um.(sadly) outdated. And should read BY THE FEW - FOR THEMSELVES.
Ladies and Gentlemen I am here to tell you that -
THE ENTIRE POLITICAL ENGINE is BROKEN! Not the R or D - Not the Rich nor the Poor. The ENTIRE POLLUTED VERSION OF IT. It wreaks of inefficiency. So the games get played while we work and play. There has to be another way.. A much simpler way...

Unbelievable, the comments here are so upsetting. Come down and see what has happened. The bulk of people who live here are not 1 percenters. It's not about boardwalks. The people who lost EVERYTHING are normal, hardworking people. Come to Union Beach, Pt Pleasant, Highlands, Sea Bright, Sea Side and all the towns along the beach. After you have done that then you deserve to comment. Normal every day people have lost everything... Small business has taken an awful hit.
It is so upsetting that the Jersey Shore is getting screwed . We have lived here forever. Gone thru many, many storms. This was unprecedented . My family has been here goiing back probably 100 years. This has NEVER happened before.
Please think before you write. You have no idea about the hurt you are causing.
The Congress should be ashamed. We still have everyday normal people, not millionaires, who have no homes, people without electricity , and no place to go.
Why are we different from those in New Orleans and else where ????

I Beleive our Governor is doing the right thing by us.
To those of you who continue to post insults at him: He goes after the unions, you insult him. He calls out our judiciary for excluding themselves from paying more for benefits, you insult him. He man tells us the State does not have the money to continue doling out for different things, you insult him. He calls out the US Speaker of the House (a fellow Republican) for doing NY and NJ wrong, and you insult him. Can I ask - What do you want from him?
For others here - Obama won re-election, the people have spoken. We wanted a President who will make the rich pay their "fair share". Now all of us rich and middle class will pay more. He gave us Obamacare, although I have never heard of a hospital turning away anyone that could not pay (I think that was called Charity Care). So let's see where unemployment, our pockets and the national debt are at the end of 2013. If you are getting a free ride on the rest of us, just disregard this because it would not bother you anyway.
As far as our Boehner goes, he was a creator of the Contract with America. Im sure if you look at it, you will see he basically threw it in the can.
Whether its Obama, Boehner or Reid (Dems or Repubs), I'm sure they could not care less about our opinions, as long as they give their people what they want the result is them same - They have been or will be reelected. Just like our elected officials here. Its what we the people want, in my opinion.

Our government (both parties) agree to send billions and billions of dollars to Haiti and other countries every year but they can't help our own states in need? Are they kidding me!!?? This has gotten way out of control, is despicable, disgusting, irrational, and is harmful to our entire economy. And it is a disgrace if the $60 billion has loopholes and other "non-Sandy relief" dollars in it. That's what they did with obamacare. Behind closed doors they passed a 2,000 page document that is filled with garbage, more hidden taxes and fees, and political favors. Big government has a poor track record of running businesses - Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Medicare, Medicaid, the US Post Office - filled with corruption, on the verge of bankruptcy or bankrupt already! And they think they can take over our entire healthcare system??!! That's crazy! Most (not all) politicians are corrupt and have a self-serving need to be "politically correct" in one way or another. Gov Christie is the first one who is not afraid to tell it like it is, and stand up for the right things. He is a strong leader, good for NJ and he will be good for our country. i have lived at the shore my entire adult life and dont understand why folks think the government should pay for their homes. does anyone take responsibility for their own lives anymore ? it is our "choice" to live on an "island", our choice to live near the ocean/bay knowing at some point a hurricane or flood will likely happen, our responsibility to prepare and "insure" our assets properly, not my neighbors, not the town nor the government. infrastructure surley, roads and bridges yes, utilities absolutely, but private property, never. we have become an "entitlement" society, a "you owe me" people. gone are the days when we built our own dreams, homes and lives. people used to take responsibility seriously, didnt look for handouts and free lunches. we worked hard and long and if we couldnt afford something we either worked harder and longer or did without, but we were happy, content and proud. the government doesnt owe us anything in regards to private property. maybe low or no interest loans to "assist" in rebuilding but no free lunches. many homes at the shore are second homes as well. people should have had enough insurance themselves considering the location we choose to live. all i ask is for everyone to stop and think and be integral with yourself and take responsibility for their own choices. my family has lost a lot but we do not expect anyone including the government to pay our way. we will rebuild, we will move on and we will pay our own way. thx for listening....

The Tea Party is the toxic group in Congress. The rest of them (the GOP) know it but they need to guts to take them on. Either they take on this lousy group of idealogues, or the Party goes down. I am a Democrat so if it is the end of the Republican Party, I can live with it. But there are good Republicans with good ideas and a lot to offer, but they are shooting themselves in the foot if they will not stand up to this extreme right. I have heard Tea Partyers speak - they don't know anything - that is the problem Like Sarah Palin, like Crhistine (I am not a witch) they simply don't know anything and should not be in any position of power. The First Amendment (that is part of the Bill of Rights of our Constitution, which you hate) is actually the reason you are able to post your nonsense. Mr. Christie is no real conservative, so he would tend to curry favor towards the Dems. He did rescue us from the awful governors, who preceded him.
When are you guys ever gonna' get it? There is no money, period!!!! Now why don't you ask your boy what he did with the over 800-billion in stimulus monies? There would have been more than enough there to have covered the 60-billion that is needed to aid storm victims.
Oh, one more thing, (and I just learned this evening) that the Second Amendment was instituted so that "individuals" could protect themselves, not from intruders, or angry neighbors, but from a tyrannical government.
I wonder why this administration is attempting to remove weapons from responsible citizens; however, Mr. Holder turns his back on illegal, unregisterd weapons being smuggled over from Mexico and countries in South America?
Perhaps you might shed some light on that one;>]

We have all colors and sizes and shapes of criminals in NJ but this jerk only talks about third world parasites. That's how people used to talk about Italian-Americans in the early 1900s or the Irish in the 1800s. He singles out the Asian Indians for some horrible comments as if only Asian Indians cheat people. OK, he's not racist, he's a narrow minded bigot. Why even mention their ethnicity. Cheaters come in all races and colors, why even mention that they are Asian Indian? Mr. Obama should have sent this aid immediately, upon returning from his visit to the shores of New Jersey. Boehner is no better - they're all no better!

Ah Penny Lane, how many times can you spell 'Republican' incorrectly?....must be a "Democrot".......lol......And here in lies the problem with America....everyone just looks for the 'D' or the 'R' and votes.....people should be required to pass a test to enter the voting booth.

This is great! I get to the end and finally found one who will place duct tape over the mouth of PL. I said there is no D and no R early on, and it is true. Americans (and probably other nations as well) are myopic - cannot see past their noses. We have another four years of a problem that is far more serious than Boehner (who is bad enough)
Again, one party masquerading as two!!!

Well, George, apparantly they do not allow duct tape in the looney bin at which Penny resides.....myopic pretty much sums it up...as much as I love this country, it really is becoming 'America the Ignorant'......do you realize during the past election, the question always asked was "who got us into this mess?" not one person asked the only pertinent question "who can get us out of it?" it is quite amazing (and sad) when you think of it, once again it was all about the 'D' or 'R'..... And Penny, you could have just stopped at "I'm sorry"....we would have understood you did not mean the apologetic "sorry"

NoParties,
Seems like that handle is misleading.
You do remember that saying attributed to many different people (I'm paraphrasing): Those who fail to remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
It seems quite a few want to forget. Just because you think your way is superior, doesn't necessarily make it superior.

Well Laura I pretty much answered this in my response to your above comment....obviously you are one of the 'D' kool-aid drinkers......the handle is not misleading at all.....and I do not think my way is superior I know not having any pol. parties is superior.......people/voters would actually need to think about the top issues and who can best address them rather than media driven kool-aid that has existed for decades where 'D' means x and 'R' means y.......it is so ridiculous that it would be funny if it was not so sad....in 2008 even I drank a little of the Hope and Change kool-aid, but we now know it was HOPEfully this guy knows what he is doing.....look back, his resume was a blank sheet of paper and unfortunately it showed.....everyone hated all the $ spent in 4 years of Bush (me included) then in comes a guy with 'D' next to his name and now it is all ok that he spent even more........paraphrasing what is the def of Insanity......doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome!

Well, I guess we have a dialogue. Always fun the way the lunatic fringe tosses out statistics and hatred. If their statements are investigated the genuine basis of their arguments usually amounts to, "because." While we, the electorate, go on and on about this group or that group and who's fault all this happens to be, the villany continues in the halls of power. Have you ever heard of Grover Norquist? The guy whose "pledge" the majority of House members signed? Who elected this guy? Not me, not you. None of us. Yet he and his associates are running our government. These are the people we need to be looking at. The government is being run by people we never heard of. What kind of representative form of government is this?
I'm afraid these agents have no interest in our brothers and sisters who continue suffering as the result of Sandy. Good luck to us all

NJ taxpayers are taxed to death with the highest combined taxes in the country. Governor Christie, where does all of this money actually go? As a federal taxpayer, why should I have to subsidize the billionaires of Mantoloking? Don't they pay insurance premiums as I do?

Gov. Christie is not doing all he can do for the Jersey Shore. He gave a speech at the Port Monmouth firehouse over a month ago in Middletown Township. He had the balls to tell the residents they would get the help they need and not be forgotten. As of this date, nothing has been done to help the residents there. The Township has stopped all the home rebuilding with a lame excuse of needing more info from FEMA concerning the flood elevations. The flood elevations were already done before Sandy. Sandy isn't figured into the flood plans and maps. Also, Sandy was an anomoly. It was not your normal hurricane in the area affected.
My daughter, who lives in Belford but was not affected by the flooding has been fighting with the Township for help for the residents along the bayshore. The township has ignored everything that was requested of them. Volunteers were turned away with the excuse that the Township was fine and needed no help. To be perfectly honest, I do not live in NJ. I did until 12 years ago when I retired. I still have friends and family in NJ, in the areas hard hit by Sandy. The one thing I am dissappointed in, is the residents that were hard hit by Sandy, but won't go after the Township and the politicians to get the assistance the Township should be providing.

I see the usual hypocrisy on these boards. My "free speech" was deleted simply for telling the truth. America you are a lost nation. You are going off into compete and total destruction and there will be no return. You are a cowardly generation who do nothing but parrot back what you're told to parrot back. All your wisdom comes from the popular opinion as given you in the media. You are incapable of forming your own opinions and thinking for yourselves. If this were not true you would have stopped voting the same ole lying, deceiving bull shitters back into office year after year. HOW MANY TIMES MORE WILL YOU HIT YOURSELVES IN THE HEAD WITH A HAMMER BEFORE YOU REALIZE IT HURTS!

I'm sorry msteel, but your free speech will always be deleted by the likes of them because they, "Do not practice what they preach." {Matt. 23: vs 2-7} These are Jesus' own words to the 'ELITE' of His day, who were as wicked as one could possibly imagine, and, a carbon copy of what we have at the helm in Washington D.C..Why don't you flower people from the 60's read a little Scriptural wisdom once in a while? Perhaps you might understand what's really going on in this life.
BTW, I liked your final sentence in the upper case. And, thanks for your service to this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I form my own opinion. People complain continually about our politicians and congress. The only problem: They are complaining about who the other guy voted for not who they voted for. It's just human nature to believe "we" voted for our elected officials because they were better than the evil ones that the "others" voted for.

@Oppressed by Princeton Leftists: By poor, I was not referring to economic status. Poor in the sense that they were victims of a terrible natural disaster. People who had their communities wiped out, erased, they lost everything. Most of these people are overwhelmingly ordinary middle class folks, they are not all millionaires, they are not all economically poor. What's the matter Oppressed by Princeton Leftists, are you jealous of the billionaires at Mantoloking? Are you envious of them? Why do you hate success, why do you hate the job creators? Why do you hate the capitalists who create jobs (in commie China)? Why do you hate capitalism? Didn't you know that the filthy rich can get to rip us off with impunity?

Christie waddled around the country, passionately stumping for Mittens Romney who campaigned on dissolving FEMA and also raised money for Iowa's Steve King who campaigned on not approving ANY Sandy assistance. So, Christie cannot be trusted any farther than you can throw him. http://t.co/wyqIpZN3

Glad that the Governor spoke out against the crazies. I hope he also re-evaluates who he raises money for in the future and the next time one of the right wing extremists in Congress wants him to headline their fundraiser, he does not take their phone call. You can't raise money that helps some of these nuts get elected and than be suprised when they refuse to help the people in your state in their time of need.

@Oppressed by Princeton Leftists: I thought all the rich people fled NJ because of the property taxes? Don't they pay property taxes in Mantoloking? I thought the rich people were leaving NJ in great hordes, clogging the NJ Turnpike with their BMWs, Lexuses and Mercedes-Benzes; columns of luxury cars for miles as far as th eye can see, escaping the evil clutches of NJ Princeton liberals, those evil liberals.

How the House crazies in Washington got screwed: When Boehner proposed "Plan B" , the nuts wouldn't go along with it, so Boehner dumped the whole matter into the lap of the Senate(FYI- the House is the body that writes bills for appropriations as directed by the Constitution) That had to have pissed off the Senate, including Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. As a result they wrote the bill giving Obama about everything he wanted, and sticking it to the House crazies...who then went ballistic when they read it and saw the Senate vote(89-8)...

How is Christies Jersey Comeback working out for NJ ?
How is 2% cap helping homeowners with their property taxes ?
How much of the 75 million AG Bank settlement did Christie give to homeowners frauded by banks ?
How much do you think the broke state, broke counties and broke town are going to give homeowners who have lost from Sandy ?

Isn't the solution obvious? More guns. If only the shore residents had been armed with UZIs and fully automatic weapons (sadly now banned in NJ and many other states), none of this would have happened. A well-armed militia, err, populace can meet force with force and shoot the heck out of any hurricane that dared to attack NJ shore areas and beyond. If only all the people in Mantoloking had been armed with semi-automatics, automatics, high capacity magazines and drums, tragedy could have been avoided. It's all in the 2nd amendment, original intent and all that good stuff. All types of guns must be legalized and available to all NRA loving residents anywhere who are deemed sane, rational and non felonious by Wayne LaPierre.

Laura - believe me, I don't need to try. I just do, and, the problem in this country is the many who do not! Fortunately for us all, there are many, many who do.
I wish I could explain why so many of you are anti-Christian, even anti-God.
